Yeah, prisoners don't get paid what other firefighters do when they sign up for wildland firefighting work. The laws are strange. I've worked with some neat progressive folks in the USFS who have made it a point to keep track of prison crews work experience and give them guidance on how the skills they learn on the job could be translated into jobs on the outside. It would be quite the challenge for a felon to get hired on to a state or fed crew, but others could.
BTW, Oregon forest fire season is much closer to the end than it is to the beginning.
